ප්රේමා පින්නවල මහතානන් පිළිබඳ අතීත මතක සිය මුහුණු පොතේ සටහන් කළ ශ්රී ලංකා මළල ක්රීඩා හිටපු ලේකම් සමන් කුමාර ගුණවර්ධන මහතා ලියූ මේ සටහන එතුමන්ට ගෞරවය පිණිස මෙලෙස උපුටා පලකරමි.

ශ්රී ලංකා ක්රීඩා ක්ෂේත්රයේ කීර්තිමත් මෙන්ම දෑවැන්ත චරිතයක් වූ ප්රේමා පින්නවල මහතා අද දින (මැයි 12) අභාවප්රාප්ත විය.
1950 දශකයේ කෝට්ටේ ක්රිස්තියානි විද්යාලයෙන් (Christian Mission College) බිහි වූ කැපී පෙනෙන ක්රීඩකයෙකු වූ ඔහු 1963 දී පේරාදෙණිය විශ්ව විද්යාලයේ ක්රීඩා කවුන්සිලයේ සභාපති ධුරයට පත්වෙමින් ක්රීඩා පරිපාලන ක්ෂේත්රයේ පළමු අත්පොත් තැබීය. 1960 දශකයේ අගභාගයේදී ශ්රී ලංකා රක්ෂණ සංස්ථාවේ සේවය ට එක්වූ ඒ මහතා වසර ගනනාවක් ජනසතු සේවා ක්රීඩා සංගමයේ විවිධ තනතුරු දැරීය. 60 දශකයේම අග භාගයේදී ලංකා මලල ක්රීඩා සංගමයේ කමිටු සාමාජිකයෙකු බවට පත් වූ ඔහු 1978 දී එම සංගමයේ උප සභාපති ධුරයට පත්විය. ඉන් අනතුරුව 1983 දී ශ්රීලංකා ජාතික ඔලිම්පික් කමිටුවේ මහලේකම් ධුරයට පත් වූ ඔහු 1998 දක්වා ඔහු වසර 15 ක් සාර්ථකව එම තනතුර දැරීය. නැවත ශ්රී ලංකා මලලක්රීඩා හා සම්බන්ධ වූ ඔහු 1998 දී ශ්රී ලංකා මලල ක්රීඩා සංගමයේ මහලේකම් ධුරයට පත් විය, වසර 25 ක පමණ කාලයක් ශ්රී ලංකා මලලක්රීඩා ප්රධාන ලේකම් ලෙස අසමසම සේවාවක් ඉටු කිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව 2023 දී ඉන් විශ්රාම ගියේය.
ප්රේමා පින්නවල මහතා මලලක්රීඩා ජාත්යන්තරයේ සියල්ලන්ගේ සිත් දිනා ගත් කැපී පෙනෙනෙ චරිතයකි. 2025 වසරේ දී මලලක්රීඩාව වෙනුවෙන් දැක් වූ සුවිශේෂී දායකත්වය අගයමින් ලෝක මලල ක්රීඩා සංගමය විසින් ඔහුට ජ්යෙෂ්ඨ ප්රවීණ ගෞරව සම්මානය පිරිනමන ලදී. ජාත්යන්තරයේ ඔහු දැරූ තනතුරු අතරින් දකුණු ආසියානු ක්රීඩා කවුන්සිලයේ ලේකම්, ආසියානු ඔලිම්පික් කවුන්සිලයේ මාධ්ය කමිටුවේ ලේකම් සහ ආසියානු මලල ක්රීඩා සංගමයේ කවුන්සිලයේ සාමාජික වැනි තනතුරු විශේෂයෙන් කැපී පෙනේ.
ක්රීඩා පරිපාලනයට අමතරව, ඔහු වසර ගණනාවක් ශ්රී ලංකා රක්ෂණ සංස්ථාවේ සාමාන්යාධිකාරී ලෙස සේවය කළ ඔහු එම කේෂ්ත්රයේ ද කැපී පෙනෙන චරිතයක් විය. ජ්යෙෂ්ඨ පරිපාලන නිලධාරිනියක් සහ යෞවන කටයුතු හා ක්රීඩා අමාත්යාංශයේ හිටපු අතිරේක ලේකම්වරියක් වූ ජයනි පින්නවල මහත්මිය සමඟ විවාහ වී සිටි ඔහු දියණියන් දෙදෙනෙකුගේ ආඩම්බර පියෙකි.
වසර 88 ක් ආයු වළඳා, ශ්රී ලංකාවට පමණක් නොව ආසියානු කලාපයේ මලලක්රීඩා ප්රවර්ධනයට අද්විතීය මෙහෙවරක් ඉටු කොට අද දින අපෙන් සමුගත් ප්රේමා පින්නවල මහතාට ක්රීඩා ලැදි අප සැම හිස නමා ගෞරව කළ යුතුව ඇත.

Prema Pinnawala, a renowned and influential figure in the Sri Lankan sports industry, passed away today (May 12).
He received his primary education from the Christian Mission College, Kotte in the 1950s and was a prominent athlete in the field of sports.
He entered the University of Peradeniya in 1960 and became the President of the University Sports Council in 1963, setting the first milestones in the field of sports administration.
He joined the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation in the late 1960s and held various positions in the Nationalized Service Sports Association for many years. In the late 1960s, he became a committee member of the Sri Lanka Athletics Association and was appointed Vice President of the Association in 1978. He then became the Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka in 1983, a position he successfully held for 15 years until 1998.
He rejoined Sri Lankan athletics and became the General Secretary of the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka in 1998, retiring in 2023 after serving as the General Secretary of Athletics Sri Lanka for 25 years.
Mr. Prema Pinnawala is a remarkable figure who has captured the hearts of all in the athletics world. In 2025, he was awarded the Senior Veteran Award by the World Athletics in recognition of his exceptional contribution to athletics. Among the positions he held internationally, those of Secretary of the South Asian Sports Council, Secretary of the Media Committee of the Olympic Council of Asia and Member of the Council of the Asian Athletics Association are particularly notable.
In addition to sports administration, he served as the General Manager of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation for many years, a prominent figure in that field as well.
He was married to Mrs. Jayani Pinnawala, a senior administrative officer and former Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and is the proud father of two daughters.
We, all sports enthusiasts, should bow our heads and pay tribute to Mr. Prema Pinnawala, who passed away today after living for 88 years and having rendered a unique service to the promotion of athletics not only in Sri Lanka but also in the Asian region.
