Rumesh Tharanga Strikes Asian Games Gold for Sri Lanka with 88.55m Throw
Sri Lanka’s javelin star Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has added another major title to his remarkable 2026 season after winning the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
Tharanga produced a winning throw of 88.55 metres in the final, securing the gold medal and once again placing Sri Lanka at the top of the podium in a major international athletics competition.
The Sri Lankan entered the competition as one of the leading contenders following a remarkable run of performances throughout the year. His victory in Aichi-Nagoya adds the Asian Games title to an already impressive list of achievements in 2026, including gold at the Commonwealth Games and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship.

Another landmark achievement
The Asian Games triumph further underlines Tharanga’s rise as one of the leading javelin throwers in the world. Earlier this year, he produced a spectacular 92.62m throw at the Rome Diamond League, setting a new Sri Lankan national record and a world-leading mark for the 2026 season.
He also became the first Sri Lankan athlete to win the Diamond League Final, completing another historic chapter in his breakthrough season.
The 23-year-old arrived in Japan following another major victory at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, where he won the men’s javelin title with a throw of 91.09m.
India take silver and bronze
Tharanga’s victory also ended India’s recent dominance of the Asian Games men’s javelin event. India had won the gold medal at the previous two editions through Neeraj Chopra, who was absent from this year’s competition.
India’s Yash Vir Singh secured the silver medal with a personal-best throw of 85.72m, while compatriot Rohit Yadav took the bronze medal with 84.35m.
Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, one of the major names in the field, finished fourth.
A golden year for Sri Lankan athletics
Tharanga’s Asian Games victory comes after a season in which he has consistently produced historic results on the international stage.
He won the Commonwealth Games men’s javelin gold medal in Glasgow with a throw of 89.75m, giving Sri Lanka its first Commonwealth Games athletics gold medal.
He followed that achievement with major victories on the Diamond League circuit and ultimately captured the Diamond League Final title before winning the World Athletics Ultimate Championship.
Now, with an Asian Games gold medal added to his collection, Rumesh Tharanga has capped another extraordinary chapter in Sri Lankan athletics.
For Sri Lanka, the victory represents yet another significant moment in a historic year for the country’s field athletics — and for Tharanga, another gold medal in a season that has firmly established him among the sport’s elite.
