Kunming, China – The 10th South Asia Expo, held in Kunming, Yunnan Province, once again highlighted the growing economic, cultural, and people-to-people connections between China and South Asian nations, with Sri Lanka emerging as one of the key participating countries at the prestigious regional event.

Recognized as one of the most significant international trade and cooperation platforms connecting China with South Asia, the South Asia Expo serves as a bridge for investment, commerce, technology, tourism, education, and cultural exchanges. Hosted in Yunnan Province, the gateway connecting China with South and Southeast Asia, the expo continues to play a vital role in advancing regional cooperation and fostering mutual development.

The expo brought together government representatives, business leaders, investors, academics, media professionals, and cultural organizations from across South Asia and beyond. Through exhibitions, business forums, investment promotion sessions, cultural showcases, and networking opportunities, participating countries were provided with a unique platform to strengthen bilateral and multilateral partnerships.

China’s Commitment to Regional Cooperation

China used the 19th South Asia Expo to reaffirm its commitment to enhancing economic cooperation with neighboring South Asian countries. Through initiatives focusing on trade facilitation, infrastructure development, technological innovation, green energy, digital transformation, and cultural connectivity, Chinese authorities emphasized the importance of building a shared future through collaboration and mutual benefit.

Yunnan Province, which has become a major hub for international engagement with South Asia, showcased its strategic role in promoting cross-border trade and connectivity. Numerous Chinese enterprises presented innovations in manufacturing, agriculture, renewable energy, transportation, healthcare, and digital technologies, reflecting China’s continued focus on high-quality development and international cooperation.

The expo also highlighted China’s growing efforts to deepen people-to-people exchanges, recognizing that cultural understanding and media cooperation are essential components of long-term regional partnerships.

Sri Lanka Showcases Economic and Cultural Potential

Sri Lanka’s participation attracted considerable attention from visitors and business representatives attending the expo. The Sri Lankan delegation promoted the country’s strengths in tourism, tea exports, agriculture, apparel manufacturing, spices, gems and jewellery, logistics, and investment opportunities.

Exhibitors showcased a range of products that reflect Sri Lanka’s rich heritage and economic potential, while representatives engaged in discussions aimed at expanding trade relations and attracting new investments from Chinese partners.

Sri Lanka’s presence at the expo underscored the longstanding friendship between the two nations. Over the years, China and Sri Lanka have maintained strong diplomatic and economic relations, with cooperation spanning infrastructure development, trade, education, tourism, and cultural exchange.

Participants noted that events such as the South Asia Expo provide valuable opportunities for Sri Lankan businesses to access one of the world’s largest markets while also promoting the country’s unique products and services to an international audience.

Strengthening Media and Cultural Understanding

A notable feature of this year’s engagement was the participation of a delegation of 19 journalists from Sri Lanka, who were given the opportunity to attend and observe the expo as part of a special media and cultural exchange initiative.

The programme was organized through the collaboration of the Yunnan International Communication Center (YICC) and the Association for Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation (ASLCSCC). The initiative aimed to enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of China and Sri Lanka by providing journalists with firsthand exposure to China’s economic development, technological advancements, cultural heritage, and regional cooperation efforts.

Throughout the visit, the Sri Lankan journalists engaged with Chinese officials, industry experts, academics, entrepreneurs, and representatives from various institutions. They also visited key development projects, cultural sites, and innovation centers in Yunnan Province, gaining valuable insights into China’s modernization journey and its growing engagement with South Asia.

The exchange programme reflects the increasing importance both countries place on media cooperation as a means of strengthening bilateral relations. By enabling journalists to experience developments on the ground, the initiative contributes to more informed reporting and deeper people-to-people connections.

Looking Ahead

As the 19th South Asia Expo concluded, participants expressed optimism about the future of China–South Asia cooperation. The event demonstrated the continued relevance of regional dialogue and collaboration in addressing shared opportunities and challenges.

For Sri Lanka, participation in the expo not only opened new avenues for trade and investment but also reinforced the strong cultural and diplomatic ties that have long connected the island nation with China. The involvement of the Sri Lankan media delegation further highlighted the growing emphasis on communication, cultural understanding, and partnership-building between the two countries.

With trade, tourism, cultural exchange, and media cooperation continuing to expand, the 19th South Asia Expo stands as another important milestone in the evolving relationship between China and Sri Lanka, while contributing to broader regional connectivity and development.
