Santner Highlights Adaptation Ahead of Crucial T20 World Cup Clash against Sri Lanka
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner struck a composed and pragmatic tone in today’s pre-match press conference, underlining the importance of quickly adapting to Colombo’s conditions ahead of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup encounter with Sri Lanka.
Santner acknowledged the challenge posed by the surface, stating that the team expects “slow, turning pitches” and emphasized that New Zealand must “adjust from the flatter wickets” they encountered earlier in the tournament. He noted that reading conditions early would be key to success.
With the Super Eights stage intensifying, Santner described the fixture as “a must-win game for us,” stressing the significance of the match in shaping New Zealand’s semi-final prospects. “Every match at this stage carries weight, and this one is no different,” he said.
The skipper also expressed confidence in the squad’s preparation, explaining that the selected group was built for varied conditions. “We picked a squad that we believed could handle different surfaces — whether it’s pace-friendly or turning,” Santner remarked.
Paying respect to the opposition, Santner highlighted Sri Lanka’s strengths, saying “Sri Lanka is outstanding at home and they know what to do in these kind of pitches and for us its about understanding the conditions and preparing accordingly and executing our skills to the best as an unit ”. However, he added that New Zealand’s recent meetings with Sri Lanka provide “valuable experience we can draw from.”
Santner concluded by reinforcing the team’s mindset: “Our focus is on adapting quickly and playing our brand of cricket.”
The game is set to play at R. Premadasa International Cricket stadium at 07.00 pm.
