Punjab Kings continued their impressive start to IPL 2026 with a thrilling five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in Match 7 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Chasing a daunting target of 210, Punjab Kings reached 210/5 in just 18.4 overs to hand Chennai Super Kings a second straight defeat of the season. It was another statement performance from Shreyas Iyer’s side, who showed remarkable composure in a high-pressure chase.
CSK Post 209/5 After Mhatre Masterclass
After being asked to bat first, Chennai Super Kings put up an imposing 209/5 in their 20 overs.
The innings began poorly for CSK as Sanju Samson departed early for 7, caught by Prabhsimran Singh off Xavier Bartlett with the score on 14.
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and young Ayush Mhatre then rebuilt the innings. Gaikwad made a steady 28 off 22 balls with two boundaries before he was caught by Nehal Wadhera off Yuzvendra Chahal.
The real momentum came from Ayush Mhatre, who played a sensational knock of 73 off 43 balls. The youngster smashed six fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 169.76 and kept Punjab’s bowlers under pressure through the middle overs.
Mhatre found useful support from Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 45 from 27 deliveries. Dube struck five boundaries and one six, ensuring CSK maintained the run rate in the closing stages.
Sarfaraz Khan then provided the late fireworks with a blistering 32 from just 12 balls, including six fours and a six. His cameo lifted Chennai beyond the 200-run mark.
However, Punjab Kings managed to pull things back slightly in the final overs. Vijaykumar Vyshak was the most successful bowler with 2/38, while Chahal and Marco Jansen picked up a wicket each.
At the halfway stage, CSK looked firmly in control with 209/5 on the board.
Punjab’s Explosive Start Sets Up the Chase
Punjab Kings came out with aggressive intent and immediately put the CSK bowlers under pressure.
Priyansh Arya gave Punjab a flying start, hammering 39 off just 11 balls. He struck three fours and four sixes and raced Punjab to 61 in only 4.2 overs before being bowled by Matt Henry.
Prabhsimran Singh continued the momentum with a composed 43 from 34 deliveries. He found the boundary six times and added an important partnership with Cooper Connolly.
Connolly also played an important hand, scoring 36 from 22 balls, while the experienced Shreyas Iyer produced the defining innings of the chase.
The Punjab Kings captain smashed a superb half-century, making 50 off only 29 deliveries with four boundaries and three sixes. His innings ensured Punjab remained ahead of the asking rate even after losing wickets in the middle overs.
When Iyer fell at 186, there was still work left to do. Nehal Wadhera departed soon after for 10, briefly giving Chennai hope.
But Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis kept their nerve. Shashank finished unbeaten on 14 off 6 balls, while Stoinis struck 9 not out from only 3 deliveries as Punjab crossed the line with eight balls to spare.
CSK Bowlers Unable to Defend Big Total
Despite defending more than 200, Chennai’s bowling attack struggled to contain Punjab’s batting lineup.
Matt Henry was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, removing Priyansh Arya and Nehal Wadhera. Anshul Kamboj also claimed two wickets, including the crucial scalp of Shreyas Iyer.
However, the rest of the attack leaked runs. Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed and the supporting bowlers were unable to stop Punjab’s relentless scoring rate as the visitors maintained more than 11 runs per over throughout the chase.
Turning Point
The turning point came during the powerplay when Priyansh Arya launched a brutal assault on the CSK bowlers. Punjab reached 68/1 after six overs, immediately putting the pressure back on Chennai.
Even after losing wickets at regular intervals, Punjab never allowed the required rate to climb beyond control. Shreyas Iyer’s calm half-century and the late finishing touch from Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis ensured the chase stayed on track.
