The 96th edition of the historic Battle of the Maroons 3-Day encounter got underway today at the SSC Grounds in Colombo, with an impressive batting performance putting the opening day firmly in favor of Ananda.

At the close of play on Day 1, Ananda had reached a strong 325 for 5 in 88 overs, thanks largely to a superb unbeaten century from Nethula Edrimanne, who anchored the innings with a patient and commanding 150* off 253 balls.

Edrimanne’s innings was the highlight of the day as he displayed tremendous concentration and technique, guiding his team through the Nalanda bowling attack while steadily building partnerships.

He received good support from Ovin Perera, who contributed a solid 53 off 79 deliveries, helping stabilize the innings during the middle session. Earlier in the day, Himira Kudagama also played a patient knock of 37 off 100 balls, while Danindu Sellaperuma added a useful 33 from 55 balls to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Ananda also benefitted from 18 extras, which included 5 wides, 1 leg bye, 9 no-balls, and 2 byes.

For Nalanda, Osanda Pamuditha was the most successful bowler on Day 1, claiming 2 wickets for 60 runs in 17 overs. He was supported by Dunitha Anusara, who picked up 1 for 76 in 15 overs, while H. Rathnayake also chipped in with 1 for 57 in 16 overs.

With five wickets still in hand and Edrimanne firmly set at the crease, Ananda will look to build on their strong position when play resumes on Day 2. Meanwhile, Nalanda will aim to strike early and prevent the total from climbing further in what promises to be an exciting continuation of this historic school cricket rivalry.
