England Clinches 2-1 ODI Series Win Over Sri Lanka with Convincing Victory in Third Match
England secured a 2-1 win in the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka after a thrilling contest in the third and deciding fixture at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday. The tourists triumphed by 53 runs, showcasing dominant performances with the bat and key breakthroughs with the ball to seal the series.
Electing to bat first after winning the toss, England put up an imposing 357 for 3 in their allotted 50 overs. Captain Harry Brook was the architect of the innings, playing an extraordinary unbeaten knock of 136 from just 66 balls, featuring 11 fours and nine sixes at an astonishing strike rate above 200. His assault was complemented by a composed century from Joe Root, who remained unbeaten on 111 off 108 deliveries, marking his 20th ODI hundred. Jacob Bethell also contributed an important 65 to boost the total.
In response, Sri Lanka displayed fighting intent through their batting order. Pavan Rathnayake emerged as the standout performer for the hosts, crafting a brilliant 121-run century, his maiden ODI hundred, in a spirited chase. Pathum Nissanka provided brisk support with a quick fifty. However, despite their combined effort, Sri Lanka were eventually dismissed for 304 in 46.4 overs, falling short of the target.
England’s bowling unit struck crucial blows at pivotal moments, restricting meaningful partnerships and applying pressure in the middle overs. Their collective performance ensured Sri Lanka’s hopes were kept at bay and secured the series victory away from home — their first ODI series win abroad since March 2023.
Harry Brook’s sensational innings earned him the Player of the Match honor, while Joe Root’s leadership and batting consistency were instrumental throughout the series. The focus now shifts to the upcoming limited-overs fixtures, with both teams looking to build momentum ahead of future international commitments.
